Fighting for a Cure

Baroness Margaret McDonagh was one of the most single minded and determined people I have ever known. She loved the Labour party and devoted her life to it. If ever there was a working-class hero, it was her. In June 2023 that life ended through Glioblastoma, a terrible brain cancer with no known cure.
This Easter, the baby in the photo was born. Welcome Mabel Marigold Trotman.
Last year we made a film with Siobhan McDonagh, Margaret’s sister, to help fundraise for Glioblastoma research. We discovered that a world leading researcher – the wonderful Dr Paul Mulholland – had started a medical trial but that it had only one participant. It was a compelling story and Ross Kemp, a friend of Margaret’s, kindly stepped in to help narrate. Through the efforts of many people money was raised and the research continues as do the much-needed fundraising and lobbying efforts to change the law on cancer research.
So, what connects Mabel and Margaret?
Mabel’s dad has Glioblastoma and had been close to death. With the help of Paul and the support of his family he pulled through and has survived for 2.5 years and counting. He probably shouldn’t be here, but he is. He was the first and only person on that medical trial.
Ben is the proud father holding the baby. He has married Emily and has bought a home.
Margaret was someone who never gave up, who never compromised in fighting for what she believed. Her sister loved her and continues the fight for a cure. Emily and Ben have also never given up and have fought hard for what they believe in – the future of their family. They deserve every happiness.
Margaret couldn’t be here to see that of course. But the purity of her love for Labour, the unfailing faith and her desire to change things and her belief in humanity deeply connect her to this photo.
One life ended. Another one begins.
A story of desperate suffering becomes a story of hope. Maybe with faith and determination things can turn around. And maybe Larkin had it right. In the end, what will survive of us is love.
